Dozens of New Products Spied at CDA Marketplace

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was plenty of excitement and intrigue on the show floor at the Convenience Distribution Association’s Marketplace event, held Feb. 26-28, in Orlando, Fla.

Exhibitors showcased a host of new products, including portable protein bowls, handheld sandwiches and liquid water enhancers.

The mini-trade show wrapped up the annual event, which celebrates the nation’s convenience products wholesale distribution industry with distributor-focused education and networking events.

1. BPI Sports

As the global water-enhancer market continues to grow, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based BPI Sports is jumping on the trend. The sports nutrition company has released new convenience-friendly water enhancers that make it easier for consumers to get supplements on the go. Four varieties are available:

  • Best Aminos supports lean muscle building and comes in Snow Cone and Fruit Punch flavors.
  • Best Energy provides a boost of energy and comes in Fruit Punch and Orange.
  • Carnitine increases metabolism and comes in Mixed Berry and Snow Cone.
  • Garcinia helps promote weight loss and comes in Lemonade and Raspberry Ice.

2. Conagra Brands


Shipping in April from Chicago-based Conagra Brands are Duke’s Shorty Tall Boy smoked sausages. The 1-ounce sticks give consumers more options for consuming Duke’s meat snacks on the go. Available flavors include Original Recipe, Hot & Spicy, Hatch Green Chile and Hickory Peach BBQ.

3. General Mills

Minneapolis-based General Mills is rolling out two new options for foodservice: Pillsbury Stuffed Waffles, rolling out in May, and Totino’s Pizza Rolls, rolling out in July. For a quick on-the-go breakfast or a snack, the Pillsbury Stuffed Waffles feature a sausage patty, egg omelet and cheddar cheese wrapped in sweet maple-flavored Belgian-style waffle. Also ideal for snacking, the Totino’s Pizza Rolls can be cooked in an oven or microwave, then packaged eight to a box and held in a warmer.

4. Glanbia Performance Nutrition

Sports nutrition company Glanbia Performance Nutrition, Downers Grove, Ill., is offering up protein in two less conventional ways with its Protein Cake Bites and Protein Almonds, both part of the company’s Optimum Nutrition arm. The Protein Cake Bites come three to a pack and contain 20 grams of protein per serving. Flavors include Berry Cheesecake, Birthday Cake, Chocolate Dipped Cherry, Chocolate Frosted Doughnut, Chocolate Mint and Red Velvet Cake.

The Protein Almonds, chocolate-coated almonds in Chocolate Jalapeno, Dark Chocolate Truffle and Cinnamon Roll flavors, contain 10 grams of protein per serving, twice the amount of regular coated almonds, the brands says. The varieties come in 1.5-ounce packs.

5. Golden West Food Group

Jumping on the heat and eat trend is Golden West Food Group, Vernon, Calif., with its Jack Link’s Portable Protein Bowls. Available in 6-ounce cups that are designed to fit a vehicle’s cup holder, the protein bowls are ready after 1 minute in the microwave. Teriyaki Chicken, Nacho Chicken Taco, Cheeseburger and Meat Lovers Pasta varieties will be available in May, and a breakfast line consisting of Bacon, Egg & Cheese and Sausage, Egg & Cheese will be available in September. The varieties contain anywhere from 13 to 25 grams of protein.

6. Hostess Brands


Hostess Brands, Kansas City, Mo., had a host of new treats on hand, including Cream Cheese Pound Cake, Iced Lemon Cake, Peanut Butter Ding Dongs and Bakery Petites Cripsi Thins in 2-ounce packages. Currently available in 6-ounce stand-up bags, Bakery Petites are decadent, small-batch thin treats that come in Chocolate Brownie and Fudge Blondie flavors. They appeal to consumers seeking sweet snacks with better-for-you attributes.

7. Jack Link's

Minong, Wis.-based Jack Link’s is bringing meat snacks to the c-store cold case with its new Cold Crafted line. Available in April, the line includes Beef & Cheddar and Beef & Pepper Jack sticks in 3-ounce packages for an SRP of $3.49, Beef & Cheese Bites in 4-ounce packages for an SRP of $3.99, Original Beef sticks in 5-ounce packs for an SRP of $3.99 and Loaded With Pepper Jack and Loaded With Cheddar sticks also in 5-ounce packs for an SRP of $3.99.

8. Land Mark Products

Land Mark Products, Milford, Iowa, is expanding its portfolio of handheld sandwiches to include Maid-Rite and Sausage Gravy Biscuit. The Maid-Rite loose-meat sandwich features the original flavor created by Fred Angell, founder of the Maid-Rite sandwich company, in 1926. The thaw and heat sandwich can be sold in the warmer or cooler for an SRP of $3.29. The Sausage Gravy Biscuit is part of Land Mark’s Dan’n Night Bites brand, and it features a flaky biscuit, pepper country gravy and sausage patty. It’s available for an SRP of $2.79.

9. Lil’ Drug Store Products

Effective April 2, Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based Lil’ Drug Store Products will manage all Chattem brands (except for Allegra trial packs and Zantac trial packs) in the convenience channel. Several of the brands joining the Lil’ Drug line are Icy Hot, Dulcolax, Gold Bond, Cortizone, Aspercreme and Unisom.

10. Mondelez International


There’s now an easier way for consumers to enjoy Oreos on the go. Oreo Thin Bites from Mondelez International, East Hanover, N.J., are now available in convenient 1.7-ounce bags. The thin and crispy bite-sized Oreo cookies are dipped in fudge and come in three flavors: original, mint and coconut. They also come in 6-ounce stand-up pouches.

11. PB Crave

Proving peanut butter is just as good for snacking as spreading, Rosemount, Minn.-based PB Crave is offering its premium line of all-natural peanut butters in new single-serve pouches. The 1.15-ounce pouches come in five flavors: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Coconut Milk Chocolate, Sweet & Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Banana and Raspberry.

12. Premier Nutrition

Emeryville, Calif.-based Premier Nutrition is combing two growing categories (jerky and bars) with its new Jerky & Nut bars under the PowerBar brand. Available in Original, Barbecue and Teriyaki flavors, the bars contain 10 grams of protein. The jerky used is 100% American beef, and the bars contain no artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors.

13. Splash Products

A division of Factory Motor Parts, Saint Paul, Minn.-based Splash Products new Ice Melt features innovative packaging. Called shaker bags, the bottom of the bag is perforated so that it only dispenses the ice melt when shaken. The bag can then be resealed and stored. Three varieties are available: Regular in a 10-pound bag, Premium in a 10-pound bag and Pet Safe in an 8-pound bag.
