Is Little Debbie Serious About Whacking a Snack?

Little Debbie is making quite a stir on Twitter with a post last week that said simply, “One Gotta Go Forever,” with photos of its iconic Oatmeal Creme Pies, Christmas Tree Cakes, Nutty Buddy and Honey Buns varieties. Even Capt. Kirk responded with a series of teary-eyed emojis: “How about none of the above?” William Shatner shouted into the Twitterverse, a rallying cry for the thousands of fans who chimed in with their displeasure.

Collegedale, Tenn.-based McKee Foods created the purely hypothetical (not actionable) Twitter campaign with the hashtag #onegottago to engage its fans. And did it ever: As of the publishing of this article, almost 8,000 Little Debbie devotees had responded, many in a panic. “I cannot make it without Nutty Bars,” said one Twitter user. “Don’t do this Little Debbie, take me instead,” said another.

“This was a social-media engagement opportunity that (from the start) was purely hypothetical, and none of those products are going anywhere,” Mike Gloekler, corporate communications and public relations manager for McKee, told Convenience Store Products. “It was simply a way to engage with consumers/fans on Twitter, with no deadline set [around obtaining feedback] because we certainly didn’t think it would get legs and run off like this. It has proven to be very popular. Our social team tells me that a follow-up post is coming that should reveal how Twitter users voted.”

Christmas Tree Cakes

Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes

Christmas Tree Cakes are tree-shaped yellow cake with creme filling decorated with white frosting, green sprinkles and a red garland frosting. They are individually wrapped and come five to a carton.

“Christmas Tree Cakes are only available for like two months out of the year, so I don't think people will miss them very much if they were gone forever (they're basically just fancy Zebra Cakes anyway). #OneGottaGo”

“Save the trees ... kick the buns! #OneGottaGo #savethetrees #votebuns”

“So help me if you take away my Christmas tree cakes, my life would be meaningless! Get rid of the honey buns! #OneGottaGo”

Oatmeal Creme Pies

Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies

The Oatmeal Cream Pie variety is a pie-cookie hybrid; it consists of two soft and chewy oatmeal cookies baked with whole grain oats and molasses and then layered with creme. It’s regarded as the very first snack baked under the Little Debbie brand name in 1960.

“I mean ... this is a fierce debate. Apparently, @LittleDebbie says #OneGottaGo. Wha? They HAVE to keep the Oatmeal Creme Pie, RIGHT?”

Honey Buns

Little Debbie Honey Buns

Honey Buns are one of the items in the Little Debbie pastry portfolio that is regarded as an anchor item. Honey Buns are soft golden pastry baked with a touch of honey and cinnamon, then finished with a sweet glaze.

“Honeybuns. Sorry not sorry. It's meh and it can go, and I need my voice heard on that. #OneGottaGo”

Nutty Buddy

Little Debbie Nutty Buddy

Nutty Buddy Wafer Bars are classic crunchy wafer bars full of peanut butter and covered in fudge. It’s noted to be one of Little Debbie’s first multipack creations.

“Hey @LittleDebbie! Please leave my oatmeal pies and nutty bars alone!!”

“Honey Buns go for sure. How dare you put Nutty Buddies on this list of options! If they ever go I will slander Little Debbie’s precious name until my dying day!”
