Bracket: Busted (Infographic)

Nielsen’s Total Store Bracket ranks the top 16 consumable categories

CHICAGO -- Another NCAA basketball season is officially behind us, and if you’re like me, your bracket was busted about three-fourths of the way through the Kentucky vs. Wisconsin game. But whether or not your favorite team hoisted the final trophy and clipped the winning net, there are clear winners sitting on your shelves right now. They might not be able to hit a three-pointer from downtown, but they’re definitely hitting at the register.

Nielsen ranked the top 16 consumable categories from key areas of the grocery store (perishable, grocery, dairy and frozen and select liquor categories) based on total 2010 dollar sales. Categories advanced based on year-over-year dollar growth. And just like the NCAA, there were some upsets along the way. Eighth-seeded bacon upset the No. 1 seed soft drinks! Nielsen’s Final Four contenders show that fresh categories account for the most consistent and quick growth across the store.
